Giovanni Battista Ferrandini

Giovanni Battista Ferrandini (* around 1710 in Venice, † November 25, 1791 in Munich ) was an Italian composer of the pre-classical period.

Ferrandini received his musical training well with Antonio Biffi at the Ospedale dei Mendicanti in Venice and completed this on probably in Pietro Torri (1650-1737) and Giuseppe Antonio Bernabei (1649-1732) in Munich, where he lived at the age of 12 years already as a boy and got a job as an oboist in the court orchestra. In 1732 he rose to become court composer in 1737 and as director of chamber music. In Munich he composed the opera Catone in Utica for the grand opening of the residence theater, which was built by François de Cuvilliés the Elder ( 1695-1768 ). 1755 left Ferrandini Munich and moved to Padua. As a token of appreciation, you can consider visiting Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who visited him in 1771 at his home. It was not until three years before his death he returned to Munich.

The opera Catone in Utica was revived in 2003 in Munich Cuvilliés Theatre; the conductor was Christoph Hammer ( New Munich Court Orchestra ).
