Giovanni Coppa

Cardinal Giovanni Coppa ( born November 9, 1925 in Alba, Cuneo, Italy) is a retired Apostolic Nuncio.

Life

Giovanni Coppa received after visiting the diocesan seminary on January 2, 1949, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After graduating from the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan, he was for the Apostolic Office and the Secretariat of State (Vatican ) operates. During the Second Vatican Council, he was hired as a Latinist. On June 21, 1963 he was awarded by Pope Paul VI. the honorary title Surplus secret chamberlain of His Holiness on 28 October 1967 honorary title Apostolic prothonotary.

On December 1, 1979, Pope John Paul II appointed Titular Archbishop of Serta and ordered him to the ex officio proceedings in the State Secretariat. The bishop ordained Coppa on January 6, 1980 the Pope. Archbishop Eduardo Martínez Somalo were co-consecrators and Bishop Ferdinando Maggioni.

On 30 June 1990 Giovanni Coppa was sent as Apostolic Nuncio to Czechoslovakia. After the division of the country Coppa represented the Holy See from 1 January 1993 to continue as nuncio to the Czech Republic. Up to 2 March 1994, he was additionally Nuncio for Slovakia. John Paul II took on 19 May 2001 at Coppas resignation from the office of Apostolic Nuncio to the Czech Republic.

Giovanni Coppa is since 2001 member of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, canon of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, and advisor to the Vatican Secretariat of State.

24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia San Lino in the College of Cardinals.
