Giovanni Cornacchia

Giovanni Cornacchia ( born June 18, 1939 in Pescara, † July 23, 2008 ) was an Italian athlete who won silver in 1962 in the 110- meter hurdles at the European Athletics Championships.

Career

Cornacchia won its first Italian championship in 1960. At the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960, he retired in 14.5 seconds in the quarter-finals. 1962 Cornacchia ran his best time of 13.9 seconds, with whom he reached the sixth place in the annual world leaderboard. At the European Championships 1962 in Belgrade, he won silver in 14.0 seconds behind Anatoly from the Soviet Union.

1964 Cornacchia won his second Italian championship. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 he put on his best time in the semifinals with electronic timing, when he was in 14.06 seconds second behind the Americans Blaine Lindgren. In the final Cornacchia finished with 14.12 seconds seventh. Besides Cornacchia ran with Eddy Ottoz in fourth place and Giorgio Mazza in eighth place two other Italians in the Olympic final hurdle of 1964.

In the Universiade 1965 in Budapest Eddy Ottoz won ahead of Giovanni Cornacchia and the American Willie Davenport. 1966 took place in Dortmund, the first European indoor games, the forerunner of the later European Indoor Championships. Cornacchia finished in his personal Hallenbestzeit of 7.9 seconds in fifth in the 60 - meter hurdles, while his compatriot Eddy Ottoz won in 7.7 seconds. Eddy Ottoz also won at the European Championships in 1966, which also took place in Budapest; Cornacchia finished in 14.2 seconds in fifth place before the third Italian Sergio Liani, who was sixth at the same time. In the Mediterranean Games in 1967 in Tunis Cornacchia won ahead Liani. In 1968 Cornacchia for the third time in the Olympic Games in part, but already retired from the lead.
