Giovanni Evangelisti

Giovanni Evangelisti ( born September 11, 1961 in Rimini ) is a former Italian long jumper.

Sporting successes

Evangelisti participated in three Olympic Games (1984 in Los Angeles, in Seoul in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992 ), three outdoor World Championships (1983 in Helsinki, 1987 in Rome and 1991 in Tokyo ) and four outdoor European Championships (1982 in Athens, 1986 Stuttgart, 1990 in part in Split and 1994 in Helsinki).

His greatest achievement was winning the bronze medal with 8.24 meters at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Evangelisti had to deal only beaten Carl Lewis and Gary Honey.

Evangelistis outdoor personal best of 8.43 meters, set on 16 May 1987 at the Italian San Giovanni Valdarno, meant a national record, which has been improved by Andrew Howe at the World Championships in Osaka in 2007.

Evangelisti ranks with his best performance to rank 34 of the eternal world leaderboard.

At a size of 1.79 m his competition weight was 70 kg.

Controversy

At the World Championships in Rome Evangelisti displaced with his final jump of 8.38 m the Americans Larry Myricks, who had previously located 8.33 m behind Carl Lewis and Robert Emmijan in third place. Evangelisti was thus awarded the bronze medal. It turned out afterwards by computer analyzes, including the German Helmar Hommel, found that Evangelistis last jump could have amounted to a maximum of 7.80 meters, so that starting from a conscious wrong decision of the judges in favor of her compatriot Evangelisti. The most innocent Evangelisti was subsequently counted with his real best jump in fourth place, while Myrick received the bronze medal.

Persistent rumors that the then - Italian - President Primo Nebbiolo should have been the Athletics IAAF involved in the affair, could not be confirmed.
