Giovanni Filoteo Achillini

Giovanni Filoteo Achillini (* 1466 in Bologna, † 1538 probably ) was an Italian scholar and poet.

He was the younger brother of Alessandro Achillini and taught himself Greek, Latin, theology, philosophy, law and poetry in itself without him but in one of these areas became an expert. From his poems little more than the titles are known.

His two didactic poems: Il Viridario (Bologna 1513) in octaves, and Il Fedele (Bologna 1523) in terza rima, are among the literary rarities and contain, among other lessons in morality. His Annotazioni del la lingua volgare (Bologna 1536) is a satire on the Tuscan and a eulogy to the Bolognese dialect.

Giovanni Filoteo Achillini was in Bologna friends with the engraver Marcantonio Raimondi ( 1475 - to 1534) and had her portrait painted of him in a copper engraving. His grandson was Claudio Achillini (1574-1640), a prominent philosopher, theologian, mathematician, poet and lawyer.
