Giovanni Francesco Toscani

Giovanni di Francesco Toscani (* 1370-1380 in Florence, † May 2, 1430 in Florence) was an Italian painter.

Giovanni di Francesco Toscani has been formed under the influence of Agnolo Gaddi, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Rossello di Jacopo Franchi, where he seems to have collaborated with the latter part. While he is close to the above-mentioned masters in his early and middle works, also has marked effects of Masaccio can be seen in the late work. From about 1424 he was a member of the painters' guild of Florence.

Toscani was mainly active as a painter of altarpieces, Cassone - panels and as fresco painter.

Until the discovery of his true name, which could be determined through documents to the frescoes in the Ardinghelli Chapel in Santa Trinita (Florence), he had been occupied in art historical research with the Notnamen Master of the Crucifixion Griggs, after the previous owners of his day in New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art kept Crucifixion panel.
