Giovanni Goria

Giuseppe Giovanni Goria ( born July 30, 1943 in Asti, † May 21, 1994 ibid ) was an Italian politician of the Christian Democrats.

Political career

Goria 1976 was elected in 1960 a member of the DC and in the Chamber of Deputies. From June 1981 to June 1982 he was State Secretary in the Budget Ministry, December 1982 to July 1987 under different governments Treasury Minister.

After the parliamentary elections in 1987, Giovanni Goria was appointed on 28 July 1987 at the time youngest Prime Minister of Italy. Only with Matteo Renzi was an even younger politicians of Italian Prime Minister in 2014.

Giovanni Goria resigned on 11 March 1988, when Parliament refused by financial disputes, to approve the budget of his cabinet. He had already twice submitted his resignation when his five-party coalition was falling apart; both times had rejected the resignation of President Francesco Cossiga.

In the following years, he held still the office of the Minister of Agriculture under Giulio Andreotti and the Minister of Finance under Giuliano Amato before it in connection with a major corruption scandal that affected many famous heads of his party, finally retired from politics in 1993. Even before his trial was completed for corruption, he died of lung cancer in his home town of Asti.
