Giovanni Lajolo

Cardinal Giovanni Lajolo ( born January 3, 1935 in Novara, Italy ) is an Italian retired Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

In 1955 he got after Philosophy and Theology studies in Novara, Italy and at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome a degree in philosophy and in 1959 the degree in Catholic theology. Giovanni Lajolo received on April 29, 1960 Bishop Ugo Poletti the sacrament of ordination to the priesthood for the Diocese of Novara. After receiving his doctorate in 1965 a diplomatic training ensued between 1968 and 1969. From 1970 to 1974 he was Attaché / Nunciature secretary and auditor of the Apostolic Nunciature in Bonn. Between 1974 and 1988, was doing the Italian activities in the Vatican Secretariat of State in the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church.

In 1976 he became head of the Central and Northern Europe Department at the State Secretariat. He was also a close associate of Cardinal Secretary of State Agostino Casaroli. Between 1979 and 1985 Lajolo was secretary of the Vatican delegation at the negotiations on the adaptation of the Concordat with Italy. 1985 to 1989 was followed by a professor at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy.

Pope John Paul II awarded him on June 30, the title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness and appointed him on October 3, 1988 Titular Archbishop of Caesariana and Secretary of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Apostolic See. He received his episcopal consecration this on 6 January 1989, co-consecrators were later Edward Idris Cassidy Cardinals and José Sánchez.

On 7 December 1995, John Paul II appointed him Apostolic Nuncio in the Federal Republic of Germany. On 7 October 2003 he was appointed Secretary for Relations with States in the Secretariat of State. There Lajolo headed the Department of Foreign Affairs. In June 2006, Pope Benedict XVI appointed. Lajolo as President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of Vatican City. The handover took place on 15 September of the same year. 24 November 2007 it took Benedict XVI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santa Maria a Monte Testaccio Liberatrice in the College of Cardinals.

On September 3, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. - With effect from 1 October 2011 - the Cardinal Lajolo put forward reasons of age resignation from the office of President of the Pontifical Commission for Vatican City State and of the Governorate of Vatican city. At the same time he appointed the former Nuncio to Italy and San Marino, Archbishop Giuseppe Bertello, to succeed him in both offices.

Following the resignation of Benedict XVI. took part in the conclave, Cardinal Lajolo, 2013, was elected to the Pope Francis.

On September 9, 2013, Lajolo gave in his capacity as a member of the Vatican Congregation for Bishops on behalf of the Vatican talking to bishops and members of the diocese of line a picture of the situation in the diocese of Limburg.
