Giovanni Paolo Maggini

Giovanni Paolo Maggini (* 1580 in Botticino near Brescia, † 1632) was an Italian luthier.

Maggini learned the violin at Gasparo da Salò ( 1549-1609 ). His early works show a significant influence of these masters. Are particularly in demand today its violas because of the dark and sonorous tone. His instruments have a particularly high and full camber. His violins have a pleasant sound, but are hard to play because of their oversize. The instruments of his last years were under increasing influence of Cremona, which is easily recognizable by the beautiful workmanship. Giovanni Paolo Maggini died 1632 a plague.

Even today, his violas and double basses are copied.
