Giovanni Saldarini

Giovanni Cardinal Saldarini ( born December 11, 1924 in Cantù, Como Province, † April 18, 2011 in Milan ) was Archbishop of Turin, Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Giovanni Saldarini studied after school Catholic theology and received on May 31, 1947 Alfredo Ildefonso Cardinal Schuster, OSB in Milan Cathedral, the sacrament of Holy Orders. After further studies him Licences Catholic theology and Biblical exegesis were awarded in the subjects. In the years 1952 to 1967 he taught Biblical theology at the seminary of Venegono. From 1967 he worked as a parish priest. Pope John Paul II granted him on 24 April 1979 title of Honorary Prelate of His Holiness.

In 1983 he was appointed by Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, SJ Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Milan.

On November 10, 1984 John Paul II appointed him titular bishop of Gaudiaba and appointed him auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Milan. He received his episcopal consecration of the Archbishop of Milan on 7 December of the same year. On 31 January 1989 he was appointed to the Pontifical Representative for questions regarding the grave cloth of Turin Archbishop of Turin and 1990.

John Paul II took him on 28 June 1991 as cardinal priest with the titular church of Sacro Cuore di Gesù a Castro Pretorio to the College of Cardinals. 1999 ranged Cardinal Saldarini because of illness in his resignation from the office of the Archbishop of Turin, the John Paul II accepted on 19 June of the same year.

Work

Giovanni Saldarini was a renowned biblical scholar as a student of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini. He became famous for his pastoral commitment for AIDS sufferers, drug addicts and illegal immigrants. In a labor dispute at Fiat 1994, he presented with Cardinal Michele Giordano and Carlo Maria Cardinal Martini demonstratively to the side of the workers.
