Giovanni Tonucci

Giovanni Tonucci ( born December 4, 1941 in Fano, Pesaro and Urbino, Italy ) was a Vatican diplomat and is the current Prelate of Loreto Territorialprälatur.

Life

Tonucci was born in Fano in the diocese of Pesaro. After graduating from high school in Fano, he entered the Pontifical Roman Seminary in Rome and studied Catholic theology and philosophy. He was ordained a priest on March 19, 1966 by Costanzo Micci. In 1968 he entered the diplomatic service of the Holy See. After training at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, he studied at the Pontifical Lateran University, where he received his doctorate in Catholic theology and canon law. From 1971 to 1989 Tonucci worked in Cameroon, United Kingdom, Yugoslavia and the United States.

He was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed titular bishop of Torcello and Apostolic Nuncio to Bolivia in 1989. The episcopal consecration on January 6, 1990 gave him Pope John Paul II himself; Co-consecrators were the Curia Archbishops Giovanni Battista Re and Miroslaw Marusyn.

He was Nuncio in Kenya in 1996. Tonucci also worked in the Vatican, including the State Secretariat and is a permanent observer for UNEP and UN -HABITAT. In 2004 he was nuncio for the Scandinavian countries Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and Norway.

Pope Benedict XVI. Tonucci appointed on 18 October 2007 to the prelates of the Territorialprälatur Loreto and pontifical ambassador for the sanctuary of Loreto. A position he took up on 1 December of the same year. On March 8, 2014, Pope Francis appointed in addition to the Papal Envoy for the Basilica of St. Anthony in Padua.

Family

His brother, Don Paolo Maria Tonucci, was from 1965 to 1994 a missionary in Brazil, and is committed to the rights of the poor. The Brazilian military dictatorship declared him the "unwanted person " and realized his citizenship from.
