Giovanni Verga

Giovanni Verga ( born September 2, 1840 in Catania ( Sicily), † January 27, 1922 ) was an Italian writer and one of the main representatives of realism, naturalism of the Italian.

Life

Giovanni Verga was the eldest son of Giovanni Battista Verga and his wife Caterina di Mauro and came from a wealthy family in Sicily. At age eleven, Verga, was received by his relatives Antonio Abate, a writer, and revolutionary of the Risorgimento. Meanwhile, patriotism as a former Carbonaro, but also his cousin Domenico Catorina, influenced him in his own words a lot.

Verga began law studies at the University of Catania to study, but he could already during this study with his first novel Amore e patria successful debut. The Casa Museo Giovanni Verga in Catania is a literary museum in the birthplace of Giovanni Verga. It is located in the palace, where Verga spent his childhood and later lived with his family. The library room is Vergas extensive private library. In display cases copies of Vergas manuscripts can be seen, the originals are preserved in the University Library of Catania.
