Giovanni Zamboni (* after 1650 in Rome, † in Pisa) was an Italian composer and lutenist.

Life

Giovanni Zamboni was known primarily as an instrumentalist, he mastered theorbo, lute, mandola, mandolin and harpsichord, from 1701 to 1713 he worked as a bassist at the Cathedral of Pisa. He is known as an excellent contrapuntist. In this respect there is no confusion, he held also the profession of gem cutter.

His works accurately reflect these two focal points of his work. The Madrigali are written in great contrapuntal skill, the Sonata d' intavolatura di Leuto, written for 14 -course archlute, demand that the highest performers virtuosity.

Four of his works were performed in 1731 in a catalog of the Viennese copyists and publisher Johann Peter van Ghelen, indicating the popularity of his works outside Italy.
