Giro di Lombardia

The Tour of Lombardy (Italian officially from 2012 "Il Lombardia ", formerly " Giro di Lombardia " ) is traditionally the last major cycling race of the season. It is considered one of the five so-called monuments of cycling.

The Italian one-day race was held annually until 2011 mid-October and is therefore the only "Monument ", which is not discharged in the spring. The 106th edition of the race in 2012 was first held before 7 October, after it was brought forward in favor of two Chinese race by the UCI on the last weekend of September. The Tour of Lombardy was first held in 1905 at the suggestion of the Italian cyclist Giovanni Gerbi, who was driving at the same time as the winner of the inaugural tournament to the finish line. Since 1907, the race of the leading sports newspaper in the country, La Gazzetta dello Sport is organized. With the exception of sweeps in 1943 and 1944, which were due to the Second World War, the "Race of the Falling Leaves " was held every year.

Fausto Coppi tops the list of record winner with five (four of them in a row) wins, followed by the four-time champion Alfredo Binda and Henri Pélissier, Costante Girardengo, Gaetano Belloni, Gino Bartali, Sean Kelly and Damiano Cunego, each with three victories.

Since 2011, the race for the UCI World Tour belongs.

Route

Although the route has undergone numerous changes over the years, the rise of Bellagio to the Madonna del Ghisallo in Magreglio is traditionally one of the main obstacles of the race and is often also place the preliminary decision, because there formed the breakaway groups with the eventual winner of the tour. Between 2004 and 2010, the target was located in Como on the shores of Lake Como, Lecco before in 2011 for the first time the destination of the tour was. Piccolo Giro di Lombardia

The Piccolo Giro di Lombardia (Eng. Small Tour of Lombardy ) is also a one-day race, which was originally reserved for amateurs and is guided in category 1.2 of the UCI Europe Tour since introduction of the single license.
