Girolamo Diruta

Girolamo Diruta (actually: Girolamo Mancini, * 1561 in Deruta, Gubbio † after 1610 ) was an Italian organist and composer.

Life and work

In 1574 he became a member of the minority monastery in Correggio, where he received Batista Capuani, in Venice and Ravenna, with his friars Claudio Merulo, Gioseffo Zarlino and Costanzo Porta his musical training as organist. He initially worked in Venice and was appointed in 1597 to the cathedral organist in Chioggia and 1609 in Gubbio.

He created religious music, including masses, motets and psalms. Widely known he was a textbook for Keyboard and Organ Il Transilvano, which he dedicated to the Prince Sigismund Báthory on Transylvania. This includes, among many own works, including those by contemporaries included.
