Girolamo Prigione

Girolamo Prigione ( born October 12, 1921 in Castellazzo Bormida, Piedmont, Italy) is an archbishop of the Roman Catholic Church and em. Diplomat of the Roman Curia.

Life

Girolamo Prigione studied and earned a doctorate in canon law and philosophy at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. He received on 18 May 1944, the ordination. He then graduated from the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy in Rome and entered the diplomatic service of the Roman Curia. He was first secretary Nunciature in Italy (1951-1957), United Kingdom (1957-1960) and the United States ( 1960-1963 ). In 1963 he was active in Vienna at the Nunciature in Austria and at the same time representatives of the curia at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA ) based in Vienna as well as delegate of the Holy See in various international fora.

He was called by Pope Paul VI in 1968. Titular Archbishop of Lauriacum ( Lorch (Upper Austria ) ) nominated and appointed Apostolic Nuncio to El Salvador and Guatemala. The episcopal ordination on 24 November 1968 in Castellazzo Bormida gave him Amleto Giovanni Cardinal Cicognani, President of the estate management of the Apostolic See; Co-consecrators were the Curia archbishop and later Cardinal Giovanni Benelli, and the Bishop of Alessandria, Giuseppe Almici. In 1973 he was Apostolic Delegate in Ghana and Nigeria, 1975-1976 first Apostolic Nuncio for Gambia and 1976 Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Nigeria. 1978 Prigione was first delegate in Mexico, from 1992 Nuncio. In Mexico, it enjoys high reputation; he became involved, among other things, for the constitutional reforms, in particular Article 130 ( principle of religious freedom ).

He was the Pope's representative in various missions and has been a consultant to the Pontifical Commission for Latin America, a member of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples and a member of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace.

His age-related resignation was met by Pope John Paul II in 1997.

Archbishop Girolamo Prigione is an honorary member of the Catholic Student Association Danubia KAV Wien- Korneuburg in the ACA.
