Girolamo Priuli (1486–1567)

Gerolamo Priuli († November 4, 1567 ) was from 1559 to 1567 83rd Doge of Venice.

Family

The Priuli were among the new families who belonged to the nobility since 1297. They were grain merchants, landowners and horse breeders and were among the richest families in the Republic. They presented three doges next Gerolamo his younger brother and predecessor in Dogenamt, Lorenzo Priuli, Doge Antonio Priuli and the ( 1618-1623 ).

Life

Gerolamo was the second youngest of six siblings. He was married to Elena Diedo, also from one of the new families.

Tomb

His tomb is in the church of San Salvatore. It is a double tomb for him and his brother Lorenzo. The two-story tomb, built in 1578-1582, designed by Cesare Franco. The statues of the patron saints of the Doges, of St. Lawrence and St. Jerome, come from Giulio dal Moro.
