Gisulf I of Benevento

Gisulf I ( † 706) was 689-706 Duke of Benevento.

Life

Gisulf was the second eldest son of the dux Romuald I of Benevento and his wife Theuderada, daughter of dux Lupus of Friuli.

When his older brother Grimoald II died in 689, his successor as Gisulf was dux of Benevento. He was married to Winiperga, with whom he had the son Romuald II.

Gisulf expanded his Dukat to the Liris. To Gisulf 703 conquered the Roman cities of Sura ( Sora ), Hirpinum ( Arpino ) and Arx ( Arce ) and pulled pillaging and plundering by Campania. In the city Horrea (possibly Puteoli ) met him emissary of Pope John VI. , The prisoner bought freely and brought Gisulf by "gifts" to end the campaign.

After Gisulfs death in 706, his son Romuald II was succeeded as dux of Benevento.
