Gitarama

Gitarama is the second largest city in Rwanda. The city is located about 40 kilometers west of the capital, Kigali, and has about 85,000 inhabitants.

Geography

Since the local government reform of January 1, 2006 Gitarama is part of the Southern Province and the administrative center of the district of Gitarama. The southern province was formed in 2006 from the merger of the province of Ruhengeri Province Butare and Gitarama Province, whose capital Gitarama had been until then.

History

In 1961, the so-called coup d'etat took place in Gitarama Gitarama. All mayors and councilors were invited to a conference. At this conference a provisional parliament and an interim president was surprisingly approved a transitional constitution, determined. This event led to the end of the monarchy and the proclamation of the Republic of Rwanda.
