Gitschtal

Gitsch ( Slow Višprijska dolina ) is a municipality with 1271 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Hermagor and an eponymous mountain valley in the southwest of Carinthia ( Austria ).

Geography

Geographical location

The municipality is located in the same name, about 15 km long tributary of the Gail Valley. The valley stretches from the town of Hermagor uphill in a northwesterly direction. Its main river is the Gössering, which flows south of Hermagor in the Gail.

The valley floor is an average of one kilometer wide, its altitude decreases gradually from 880 to 600 m above sea level. A. The municipal boundaries on the mountain ridges extend to the north with the Mittagsnock to 1508 m and in the south (towards Obergailtal ) with the Hochenwarter level up to 1688 m. The landscape is, however, influenced by the lying to the west of the massif Reißkofels ( 2371 m ), where the boundary of the parish Gitsch up to a pre-summit, namely the Sattelnock, 2033 m, is sufficient. In the east of the municipality, the municipal boundary runs along the north steeply to the Weissensee sloping bare peaks of Golz, 2004 m.

History

The earliest record of a Gitschtaler village is the Weißbriach from the year 1331st

From the 16th century precious metals and later iron ore were mined in Gitsch. In Gösseringgraben to hammer works that were bought middle of the 17th century by Baron wreath and until its closure in the 19th century ensured a steep economic advancement were.

Tourism in Gitsch began in the second half of the 19th century, after the First World War, the Kneipp spa house was built.

Today's local church Gitsch was constituted in 1850, first as a community Weißbriach. As part of the community structure reform, the two were formerly independent municipalities summarized Weißbriach and St. Lorenzen im Gitschtal 1973 Gitsch community.

Population

According to 2001 census Gitsch has 1,321 inhabitants, of which 94.8 % have Austrian, 2.3% German and 1.3% Bosnian citizenship. 58.1 % of the population profess the Protestant and 38.8 % to the Roman Catholic Church, and 0.9 % are Muslim faith. 1.5 % of residents are without religious confession.

Economy and infrastructure

In the region of intensive mining was carried out from 13th to 16th century. Gold, silver and iron ore were the main commodities mined. Nowadays, wood has taken the rank of the main product. The population lives mainly from tourism and agriculture. The concept of tourism focuses primarily on seeking relaxation hikers and ski and cross-country skiers.

Coat of arms

In the municipal coat of arms, the front half of the shield recalls with crossed gold mine mark (mountain iron and mallet ) to the local mining industry, behind a floating silver (white ) cross is in blue shown, which is a symbol of the healing properties of the water. Coat of arms and flag (blue- yellow crest with incorporated ) from the community were awarded by deed of 10 February 1964 and confirmed at the Association of Municipalities Weißbriach and St. Lorenzen by official decision on 19 November 1973.
