Giudicato of Arborea

During the period of Giudicati from the 9th to the 13th century Arborea was an independent administrative district of Sardinia (from about 827 ) which extends to 1409 or 1478, as the last of four Judikaten ( the others were Cagliari to 1257, Gallura to 1296 and Torres to 1259 ), the independence of the maritime powers of Pisa and Genoa, who enjoyed privileges from 1016 in Sardinia, and was later able to preserve of Aragon.

In 1070 the judge Onroccus moved the capital of giudicato Tharros in the newly founded Aristanis, today Oristano. 1131 the Genoese were granted by the judge Comita privileges in giudicato. He invited his counterparts in 1146 for a conference of Bonarcado to settle a controversy. The judge Barisone paid 4,000 marks of silver, which he had received as a loan by the Genoese, to Emperor Frederick I ( Barbarossa ), the then king Barisone I ( 1164-1184 ) of Sardinia appointed him. The Pisan Guglielmo de Capraia took 1253 as a judge of Arborea three districts of Cagliari giudicato and more after the victory in the shaft of Sancta Igia in his possession. 1259 he occupied three districts of the dissolved giudicato Torres. 1374 succeeded Mariano IV of Arborea to the judge with the exception of the cities of Cagliari and Alghero not to conquer Sardinia.

After the murder of his son, the judge Ugones III. in 1383 followed his sister Eleonora († 1404) as guardianship regent for her minor son on the throne. She graduated in 1388 with a peace Aragon. Eleonora, who was married for political reasons with the Genoese Brancaleone Doria, enacted the by her father Mariano IV wrote of law " Carta de logu ", a penned in the Sardinian language Criminal and Civil Code. The Carta de LOGU became an important heritage, which was acquired by the Aragonese and had valid until 1827.

1409 was Arborèas (and Sardinia ) last judge, Guglielmo IV, defeated by the Aragonese in the Battle of Sanluri. The giudicato Arborea first, thus losing its sovereignty. Leonardo Alagon, the Margrave of Oristano in 1470 took the struggle for independence against Aragon again, but was defeated in the Battle of Macomer on 19 May 1478 which meant the definitive end Arboreas.
