Giuliano Montaldo

Giuliano Montaldo ( born February 22, 1930 in Genoa ) is an Italian film director.

Life and work

During his student days Montaldo was directed by Carlo Lizzani for the lead role in the movie Attention! Banditi! (1950 ) obliged. Actor roles in Luciano Emmer, Valerio Zurlini and Francesco Maselli followed. After these experiences Montaldo began training to assistant director Gillo Pontecorvo and at Lizzani. First own short films were made in 1958/ 1959.

In 1960 he directed his first feature-length film Tiro al piccione a youth in the Republic of Salò, which was in competition program of the Venice Film Festival in 1961. Followed in 1965 Una bella grinta, for which he also wrote the screenplay himself. The cynical Handlungsenwticklung had the economic boom in Italy the subject. The film won the Special Jury Prize at the Berlinale.

Montaldo continued his career with the films God with us (1969) and Sacco e Vanzetti (1971 ) continues ( see, for historical criminal case Article Sacco and Vanzetti ). For God is with us, a film about abuse of the military and religious power, he was again nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 1982 he produced the monumental television series Marco Polo, for which he was awarded the Emmy

For his life's work he received in 2007 David di Donatello. With his film The entrepreneur (L' Industriale ), he won a 2012 Globo D' Oro for Best Film.
