Giulio Alfieri

Giulio Alfieri (* July 10, 1924 in Parma, † March 20, 2002 in Modena ) was an Italian automobile and bicycle engineer. Alfieri coined in the 1950s and 1960s, the models of the sports car manufacturer Maserati; in the history of the brand, this phase is often referred to as "the Alfieri era".

Life

Alfieri studied at the Milan Polytechnic. After the completion of training, he worked in the shipping industry; Here he developed steam turbines. In 1949 he moved to Innocenti, where he worked on the construction of scooters from Lambretta type.

As of August 1, 1953 Alfieri worked for Maserati. There he took over in 1955 the post of chief engineer. He was responsible for the engineering of a variety of known and successful racing and road-going sports cars. The constructed Alfieri race car include the Formula 1 model 250F, the 300S and the Birdcage. The 250F is often viewed in the literature as Alfieri's best work.

Mid -1950s designed Alfieri the 3500 GT, the first produced in larger quantities model Maseratis. He held the coupe, which was for the survival of the brand of central importance for its best construction. More road sports cars of Alfieri were the Sebring, the Mistral, the Mexico, the Indy, the Quattroporte I, the Ghibli. After the takeover by Citroën Alfieri Maserati also took over development work for the French car manufacturer. So he designed among other things, the six-cylinder engine for the Citroën SM. For Maserati also the Bora, the first mid-engine sports car the brand was born. Alfieri Maserati last design was the Khamsin, a classic Gran Turismo.

As Maserati was taken over in 1975 by Alejandro de Tomaso, Alfieri ended 20 years of service for the Modenese company. De Tomaso had already tried in 1968, Maserati to take over from the former owners, the Orsi family. The project had failed primarily on resistance Giulio Alfieri. After de Tomaso, the company had finally bought in August 1975, he dismissed Alfieri on the day taking over the business. His successor was Aurelio Bertocchi, the son of longtime Maserati test driver Guerrino Bertocchi.

Alfieri then moved to Lamborghini, where he worked on the development of the S version of the Countach and the silhouette. Alfieri was also involved in the initial considerations for a Lamborghini SUV. For this project, which began in 1977, was the LM002 later. Alfieri remained until 1987 Lamborghini.
