Giulio Paolini

Giulio Paolini ( born November 5, 1940 in Genoa, lives in Turin and Paris ) is an Italian painter, sculptor, object and conceptual artist and important representatives of Arte Povera in Italy.

Life and work

Giulio Paolini made ​​until 1959, trained as a graphic designer. After this time, he began to engage in artistic painting and collage for the analysis of his artistic means. At the same time he examined linguistic systems. His first documented work Disegno geometrico dates from the year 1960.

In 1964 took his first solo exhibition at the Galleria La Salita, Rome. Since that time Giulio Paolini was represented at numerous solo and group exhibitions in Italy and abroad. In 1967, Paolini took part in the first exhibition of Arte Povera at the Galleria La Bertesca in Genoa part.

Giulio Paolini focuses on his creative work on the phenomenon of vision. It also examines issues such as space and time, the perspective and cultural conditionings of the author and viewer. In 1965 he began to also deal with photography.

Since the year 1972 related groups of works created under the collective term " Idem ". In the 70 years Paolini dealt with classical mythological symbolism and photos and elements of classic sculptures used. Its goal was the questioning of art, originality and reproduction. In 1972 he was working with some participants of the Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Department of Individual mythology.

He published since 1975 philosophical and critical essays in various magazines and publications as their own. In 1975 appeared as Idem with an introduction by Italo Calvino.

Giulio Paolini was represented at the Venice Biennale, among many other international exhibitions, among others, in the years 1970, 1976, 1984, 1986, 1993 and 1997 and after 1972 three more times in Kassel on a documenta: in 1977 at Documenta 6, 1982 Documenta 7 in 1992 and represented in the Documenta IX as an artist.

For the season 2002/2003 at the Vienna State Opera he designed as part of the museum designed in progress exhibition series " Iron Curtain " a huge big screen (176 m²).
