Giuseppe Amato

Giuseppe Amato, ( called Peppino, actually Giuseppe Vasaturo; born August 24, 1899 in Naples, † February 3, 1964 in Rome ) was an Italian film producer and director.

Life

Amato had acquired in the 1920s some reputation in the Neapolitan theater scene, when he turned to the beginning of the 1930s, the film production. After some time in the USA under his management, a variety of often remarkable films, among which include The Bicycle Thief and La Dolce Vita the best known. Time and again he also staged itself so that originated 1938-1961 eight films in-house.

Amato was a patron of Vittorio de Sica and Roberto Rossellini, and thus a forerunner of neorealism in Italian cinema. Again and again he showed flair for trend-setting films for which he also financial risk was not afraid. Under his aegis that films like passe fra le nuvole Quattro ( 1942) and La cena delle beffe in the same year, Rome, Open City (1945 ), Umberto D. (1952) and Pietro Germi under smooth skin (1959).

Amato's daughter Mary is married to Bud Spencer.

1964 Amato died of a heart attack. He was portrayed in the film Celluloide (1996 ) by Massimo Dapporto.
