Giuseppe Ferlini

Giuseppe Ferlini ( born April 23 1797 in Bologna, † December 29, 1870 ibid ) was Italian doctor and adventurer.

He served in Sennar and Khartoum as a surgeon in the Egyptian Army, which in turn dominated since 1821 parts of Sudan. From there he visited the pyramids of Meroe in 1834 and destroyed some of them in search of treasures. He found the jewels of Queen Amanishakheto and tried to sell them to various museums, but no one believed in Europe at this time that such high-quality objects could come from black Africa. Eventually, they were bought by Berlin and Munich, where they are located today.

A report of his Ausgrabungen appeared in 1837 in Italian in Bologna, a French translation was published in 1838 in Rome.
