Giuseppe Marc'Antonio Baretti

Giuseppe Baretti (* April 24, 1719 in Turin, Italy, † May 5, 1789 in London ) was an Italian poet.

Life

Giuseppe Baretti moved in 1751 to London, where he became head of the Italian theater. In 1760 he was a " Dictionary of the English and Italian Language" out. In 1760 he traveled through Portugal and Spain to Italy; the impressions of this journey he described in his famous work " Lettere famigliari ". Under the pseudonym Aristarco Scannabue he published the critical literary magazine " Frusta letteraria " which programmatically directed against the Arcadians and tried to disseminate the latest intellectual and cultural currents. When the magazine was suppressed, Baretti went again to London, where he remained until his death in 1789. He gained great fame as a translator of Ovid and Corneille as well as defenders of Shakespeare against Voltaire.
