Giuseppe Penone

Giuseppe Penone ( born April 3, 1947 in Garessio, Italy ) is an Italian artist.

Life and work

Penone currently lives and works in Turin, he also teaches at the École des Beaux -Arts in Paris. He is regarded as the representative of Arte Povera, his installations and objects are usually objects and materials from nature.

In 1972, Giuseppe Penone was participant in Documenta 5 in Kassel in the Department of Individual Mythologies: self-presentation - Exhibits and at the Documenta 7 (1982) and the Documenta 8 in 1987, represented by works. In 1989 he received the Turner Prize and in 2001 he Rolf Schock Prize is awarded. Recently honored him with the Centre Georges Pompidou a retrospective.

On 27 May 2010 Giuseppe Penone was announced as the first participant taking place in 2012 Documenta (13) and in June of the same year Penone's work idea di Pietra ( Ideas of Stone ) as the first work of art Documenta ( 13) in the Kassler Karlsaue close the Orangery inaugurated. The approximately 9 meters high bronze sculpture, which refers to the planting 7000 oaks of Joseph Beuys, represents a leafless tree, the branches were cut off and seems to have in its branches catch a large granite boulder. At the foot of the bronze tree Penone planted a small holly, which is said to have reached an impressive size of the opening of the next documenta. The sculpture was purchased from donations Kassel citizens.
