Giuseppe Sammartini

Giuseppe Sammartini ( born January 6, 1695 in Milan, † 17 to 23 November 1750 in London ) was an Italian oboist and composer.

Life

Giuseppe Sammartini was the son of coming from France oboist Alexis Saint -Martin to the world and was a brother of the more famous composer Giovanni Battista Sammartini, which is referred to as " Milanese " Sammartini. He went to his work as an oboist in the orchestra of Milan's Teatro Regio Ducal around 1728 to London. Therefore, he was later called the "London " Sammartini.

Under George Frideric Handel, he played in London's King's Theatre and became very famous during his lifetime as oboe virtuoso. His compositions - mostly sonatas or concertos for his own instrument, but also Concerti grossi - were initially not very common. Many of his works were published after his death, however, came very well received and played until the 19th century in the Concerts of Ancient Music.

Sammartini today

Today Giuseppe Sammartini is known primarily oboist. His Schott newly edited Sonata in G major for oboe and basso continuo part of the Baroque standard repertoire for the instrument. The orchestral works were not re-issued, but are present in various European and American libraries. The specialist in early music musician Maurice Steger has collected Giuseppe Sammartini's work and partly edited. From the recorder player Maurice Steger are first recordings of the composer before ( Giuseppe Sammartini: Sonate per flauto, Harmonia Mundi, 2007).
