Giuseppe Saragat

? Giuseppe Saragat { { {2 }} } / i ( born September 19, 1898 in Turin, † June 11, 1988 in Rome ) was an Italian politician.

Life

Saragat was the son of a Sardinian family originating from Spain. His father was born in Sassari. By 1920, studied Saragat. In 1922, he joined the United Socialist Party ( PSU). During the fascist regime of Benito Mussolini Saragat lived from 1926 to 1943 in exile in Austria, France and Switzerland, in close contact with Pietro Nenni.

In 1943 he returned to Italy, to the Resistance closed against the Republic of Salò on, fell into German captivity, from which he escaped and went to Milan, where he founded the PSI again along with others. From 1954 to 1957 he was part of the Italian government again as the Deputy Prime Minister. From 1963 to 1964 he served as foreign minister of his country.

On December 28, 1964, he was elected with the votes of, inter alia, the Socialists and Communists president. This office he retained until 1971, after which he was ex officio senator for life. In March 1976 he joined again to the Office of the Secretary of the PSDI, from which he resigned already in June 1976 because of an election defeat of his party. From then on, he served as party president.
