Giuseppe Spinelli

Giuseppe Spinelli ( born February 1, 1694 Naples, † April 12, 1763 in Ostia ) was an Italian Cardinal and Prefect of the Congregation de propaganda fide.

He was ordained a priest in 1725 Titular Archbishop of Corinthus 1724. From 1734 to 1754 he was archbishop of Naples. In the consistory of 17 January 1735, he was called by Pope Clement XII. elevated to cardinal priest of Santa Pudenziana. In this role, he led a search for the relics of Agrippinus, an early bishop of the city. He also commissioned Stefano Pozzi, the Cathedral in Naples to decorate.

1756 Spinelli was appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. As early as 1753 he had become Bishop of Palestrina, in 1759, he was appointed Bishop of Porto e Santa Rufina and in 1761 bishop of Ostia. Spinelli was in the College of Cardinals to the so-called Zelanti Group, the traditionalists loyal to the Pope. In June 1761, he was dean of the Sacred College.
