Giuseppe Torelli

Giuseppe Torelli ( born April 22, 1658 Verona, † February 8, 1709 in Bologna ) was an Italian violinist and composer of the Baroque.

Life

Giuseppe Torelli was one of the great Italian composer and violinist of the late 17th century. He comes from a distinguished family of artists and received his education probably in the vicinity of Kathedralorchesters San Petronio. He studied composition with Giacomo Antonio Perti and was named after strict examination as a 26- year-old member of the Bolognese Accademia Filarmonica. Since 1686 he was a violist in the orchestra of Bologna. In 1698 he became conductor of the court orchestra of the Margrave of Ansbach. 1699 and 1700 he was active in Vienna and from 1701 until his death again in Bologna.

Work and efforts

His work had a great influence on the development of the concerto grosso. But he also led the three-movement concerto form of a (fast, slow, fast ), which was later generally adopted. His work includes seven Opus series with a total of 84 well-known works.

He introduced in 1700 the music of a violin soloist with the orchestra, then a major breakthrough compared to the concerto grosso, where a group of soloists was used. Model was already a century earlier arisen opera aria. Torelli mostly wrote sonatas, concerti grossi and solo concertos.
