Giv'at Shmuel

Givat Shmuel (Hebrew גבעת שמואל, also Giv'at Shemuel ) is a city in central Israel, surrounded by the major cities Ramat Gan, Bnei Brak, Kiryat Ono and Petah Tikva. It is located in Gush Dan, the metropolitan area of Tel Aviv. The area is built to one-third, the remaining two thirds is used for agriculture.

Givat Shmuel means " Hill of Samuel ".

History

The city was founded by a group of immigrants from Romania, headed by Shmuel Pineles, one of the leading activists of the Zionist movement in Romania, in 1942 and received its name after him. In the early years, many Jewish immigrants from Morocco settled in Givat Shmuel. 1949 was constituted as a church Givat Shmuel (Local Council). In recent years the city has undergone strong growth and doubled its population between 1998 and 2005.

In the first years of its existence, the city was ruled by the Labour Party. The German -born mayor Ya'acov " Jankele " Vismonski, who was mayor from 1973 to 1993 Givat Shmuel, founded in 1987 a partnership with the Hanseatic city of Stade in Lower Saxony.
