Giverny

Giverny is a commune with 501 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Eure in the Haute-Normandie region. The place belongs to the arrondissement Les Andelys and the Municipal Association Portes de l'Eure.

Geography

Giverny is located on the eastern edge of the Norman department of Eure, at the confluence of the Seine and Epte, 5 kilometers west of the Regional Natural Park Vexin français (fr: Parc naturel régional du Vexin français), 63 kilometers north- west of Paris, 6 kilometers southwest of Gasny and 4 kilometers east of Vernon.

Origin of the name

Giverny was first mentioned as Warnacus 671, 863 as Wariniacus and around 1026 as Givernacus. The place name is composed of the original Germanic name Warinus and the Celtic place names mission - acum.

It is more of a Gallo-Roman place names * GABRINIACU. The second component is the familiar suffix * -ACU Celtic descent * ako.

History

In the 7th century wine was grown at Giverny. The vineyards belonged to the Abbey of Saint - wall groove and were transferred to the county in the 8th century by Abbot Teutsind. 863 had the Abbey of Saint- Denis land ownership. The Abbey of Saint -Ouen in Rouen also has had since the 9th century estate in the valley of the Epte at Giverny and Gasny. Before 1066 the Abbey of Saint -Ouen received the vineyards and before the 13th century it was the church of Sainte -Radegonde. In 1678 it was finally testified that the fief Giverny of the Abbey of Saint -Ouen belonged. But there was a second fief in Giverny, which belonged to a family which had been named after the village.

1793 Giverny was given the status of a municipality and in 1801 the right to local self-government in the wake of the French Revolution ( 1789-1799 ).

The station Giverny Limetz was on the railway line Gisors - Vernonnet, which was inaugurated on 15 July 1869. The passenger was set in March 1940, the freight in 1941. The railway line was used by the German forces to transport the materials for the construction of the Atlantic Wall in World War II (1939-1945 ).

Attractions

The house and garden of Claude Monet in 1976 entered in the additional list of official historical monuments. The property is also classified as a site classé ( natural monument ). Around 1890, bought three parcels of land on the Monet were three cottages. He taught there one his garden and stood 1911-1918 a house that is now a museum. As Monet moved to Giverny in 1883, the old Hôtel Baudy was only a Épicerie with a taproom. It was named after the then owners. 1891, the building was transformed into a hotel with 20 rooms and housed primarily a painter from the United States. The rose garden of the Hôtel Baudy was also created in the late 19th century. Today the building is used as a restaurant.

The Musée des impressionismes Giverny was founded as Musée d'Art Américain by the Fondation Terra and opened in 1992. His garden is in the style of the gardens of the painter, who lived towards the end of the 19th century in Giverny, furnished. The Fondation Terra has also acquired various plots, the painters from the United States had heard these include Maison du Hameau, which had the painter Lilla Cabot Perry belongs 1884-1928. The Romanesque church of Sainte -Radegonde dates from the 11th century and was rebuilt several times. From the 11th century the southern apse and the gables have been preserved. The northern wall of the nave and the northern apse date from the 12th century. The church was entered in the Register of Historic Monuments additional 2009. In the cemetery at the church is the grave of Claude Monet.
