Givet

Givet ( Walloon: Djivet ) is a commune with 6626 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Ardennes, Champagne-Ardenne region.

Geography

Givet in the Ardennes, at the mouth of the river Houille into the Meuse. Here is the northernmost point of the French Meuse valley. Just downstream of Givet enters the Meuse to the territory of Belgium. In Givet also ends the French Canal de la Meuse, which uses the channeled Maas for shipping.

History

Its exposed location, surrounded by Belgian territory, derives from conquests and treaties of Louis XIV against the Spanish Netherlands and the Prince-Bishopric of Liège: His goal was to at all costs to keep the Meuse valley for France. Givet already part of the cultural district of the Walloon language that is otherwise spoken in Wallonia, the southern part of Belgium.

After Givet the upper stage of the Middle Devonian, was named the Givetian.

Attractions

Givet is for its annual Onion Festival ( Foire aux Oignons ) on 11 November, known during which the streets of traders are busy and a popular festival takes place.

About the city also stands the fortress built by Charles V in 1555 Charlemont.
