Giya Kancheli

Giya Kancheli Alexandrovich (Russian Гия Александрович Канчели, English transcription Giya Kancheli Alexandrovich, georgian გია ყანჩელი / Gia Qantscheli, . Born August 10, 1935 in Tbilisi ) is a Georgian composer.

Life

Kancheli was born the son of a surgeon. He studied geology before he moved to the State Conservatory of Tbilisi in 1959. There he studied under Ilia Tuskia composition. He then worked as a freelance composer, composed music for film and stage music.

From 1966 he worked with the chief director of the Rustaveli State Academic Theatre in Tbilisi, Robert Sturua. Caused a sensation in his music for a modern Shakespeare production. In 1971 he became musical director of the stage. From 1971 to 1978 he worked as a teacher of composition at the State Conservatory of Tbilisi. From 1984 to 1989 he was Chairman of the Georgian Composers Union.

1991 Kancheli left Georgia. Since then he has lived in Western Europe. Between 1991 and 1992 he lived at the invitation of the German Academic Exchange Service ( DAAD) in Berlin. In 1995 he moved as a composer for the Royal Flemish Philharmonic to Antwerp. Since 1996 he lives as a freelancer in Belgium.

Services

Kancheli has already composed in his student days pop and chanson. Between 1967 and 1986 he wrote seven symphonies and gained a reputation as an avant-garde. The opera was first performed for the living in Tbilisi in 1984. He composed music for numerous films and plays, including to the Blue Mountains or An improbable story ( Eldar Shengelaya, 1984) and The Kiss of the bear ( Sergei Bodrov sen., 2002), as well as many films by the Georgian director Georgi Danelija. From 1971 music came to plays such as The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht ( 1975) and Richard III. by William Shakespeare ( 1979). His compositions combine modern elements such as clusters with archaic melodies and usually have an atmosphere which is characterized by deep sadness.

Kancheli is married and has two children.
