The Gjakova Airport is a military airfield in Kosovo, which is headed by the Italian Air Force.

Location

The Gjakova Airport is located in the immediate vicinity of the Kosovar town of Gjakova (Serbian: Đakovica ), four kilometers south of the Radonjić Lake ( Liqeni i Radoniqit ).

History

The Gjakova Airport was built purely as a military airfield and came to the war in Kosovo very important.

After the Kosovo war the military airfield was taken over by KFOR and has since been used solely for humanitarian and military flights. As the airport is located in the Italian jurisdiction, he is led by the Italian Air Force, who have put in the years around 2003 a lot of money in the expansion and modernization of the airport. They are currently (2004 ) is responsible for the maintenance and operation.

Plans to use as a commercial airport

The Italian KFOR troops and the Ministry of Transport of Kosovo want the inclusion of civil flights in Gjakova. As a commercial airport Gjakova Pristina would be a competitor to the now very well-utilized airport. In addition, the Gjakova Airport would have the advantage that it is not as strong in the winter plagued by fog as the airport in Pristina. Under the current line, this is rather unlikely - under civilian administration, the project could be realized sooner.

Kosovo's Ministry of Transport and Communications provides, in a paper on the development of the airports Prishtina and Gjakova to create a master plan for the airport Gjakova. In addition, the current start and runway to be extended with a length of 1800 meters and a width of 30 meters to 2400 meters and widened to 45 meters. So ICAO standards should be adhered to.
