Gjallarbrú

Gjallarbru ( altwestnordisch: the " bridge over the river beyond Gjöll " ) is a place of Norse mythology on the edge of the underworld Hel.

Snorri Sturluson describes in Gylfaginning that the bridge is covered with shining gold. It is guarded by the maid Modgudr ( Móðguðr ). Balder's brother Hermodr ( Hermóðr ) rides over the bridge on Odin's horse Sleipnir, to demand the return of Balder from the underworld goddess Hel:

The bridge is first written records in the 13th century. Controversial is whether the afterlife bridge was really part of the pagan Germanic mythology.
