Gjende

The Gjende is nestled between steep mountain slopes in the eastern Jotunheimengebiet in the Norwegian municipality Lom in the province of Oppland.

On the north side there are the steep walls of the Vesslefjells ( 1,743 m) of Besseggengrats and Memurutunga. About the ridge Besseggen leads a popular hiking trail, from which one has a beautiful view of the lake Gjende and the surrounding mountains. The south bank form nearly perpendicular sloping slopes of Knutsholtind ( 2341 m), Tjönnholstind ( 2331 m) and Bukkehåmåren (1910 m). Due to the steep bank slopes and its elongated shape of the Gjende acts like a fjord.

From the glacier tributaries Muru and Storåe by grinding the material debris ( moraine ) resulting glacier milk is transported into the lake and gives the Gjende its striking emerald green color.

At the eastern end of the private cottage Memurubu and at the western end is the DNT cabin Gjendesheim, about midway on the north shore, the DNT cabin Gjendebu. Between the three shelters run regularly in the summer boats.
