GKS Katowice

GKS Katowice is a sports club based in Katowice (Katowice ) in Poland. It was founded in 1964. The colors of the club are yellow, green and black. The team plays since the 2008/ 09 season in the sub-prime first league. The second team GKS Katowice II plays in the fourth league.

History

In 1963, a special committee was convened in Katowice, to unite with the aim of all clubs and sports clubs in the city to a large. Mid-year 1963, Rapid Welnowiec and Orzel Welnowiec united to Rapid / Orzel. 1964 united then Rapid / Orzel, Gornik Katowice, Koszutka Katowice, Katowice club Lyzwarski ( Katowice skating club), Katowice club Sportowy Gornik, Górniczy club Zeglarski Szkwal Katowice and other sports institutions to the present GKS ​​KATOWICE. Four years later, on August 9, 1968 yet joined the club Dąb Katowice was founded in 1911. The first top-flight completed GKS Katowice on August 8, 1965 against Gornik Zabrze. 1986, the club reached the knockout stages of the Europa Cup Winners' Cup after 3-0 and 1-0 was defeated in the first round of the Icelandic representative Fram Reykjavík.

From 27 March 2003 to 11 June 2004, the club played under the name Dospel Katowice. In the season 2004/ 05 GKS finished 14th in the Ekstraklasa and dismounted in the League II. But for legal and financial reasons it was decided to take up the game operating in the IV league. After relegation to the fourth division, the club was taken over by the group Stowarzyszenie Sympatykow Klubu GKS Katowice, which consists of long -time fans of the club. In June 2006, the club went through in first place in League IV and after two relegation matches in the III. League. In June 2007, GKS rises again. By the second place, the team qualified for the play-offs for the second league. Through the relegation of GKS Katowice first drawing opposing team rose to automatically. In the 2007 /08 season GKS Katowice was able to keep the League II without any problems and landed at the end with 43 points from 34 games on the 10th Place. For the 2008/09 season the League II was renamed 1st League, where the club finished in last place after the first round. A strong second half of the club managed to surprise the league and finished at the end of the 11th place in the standings.

By stay away from sponsors GKS is currently in a serious economic crisis, however, could still continue with financial support of the City of Katowice and big savings to league play.

The biggest fan outside of Katowice are available in Jaworzno, Mysłowice, Trzebinia, Siemianowice Śląskie, Lędziny, Imielin, Wolbrom, Piekary Śląskie, Zory and Slawkow. The best known in Katowice are Ultras GieKSa, Bractwo Weteranów, NetFans Gieksa, SK 1964 GieKSa on tour and Młoda GieKSa. Fan friendships exist for 15 years to Banik Ostrava ( Czech Republic) and, more recently, to Gornik Zabrze. In addition, there are also good contacts to the fans of the JKS Jaroslaw. Earlier friendly relations with Dynamo Dresden and AIK Solna in Sweden no longer exist today.

Hockey Department

The ice hockey team of the GKS Katowice Polish Champion has been six times since 2013, the club plays in the Playoff Final, the highest ice hockey league in Poland.
