Gladbach Abbey

The Town Hall Abbey is a former Benedictine abbey on the Mönchengladbach mountain. Construction of the building began in 1663 and was completed around the year 1705. In 1802 the monastery was secularized after the occupation by French troops and used 1805-1835 as a spinning mill. In 1835 the town bought the main building and used it, after the demolition of the old town hall on the market, as an official spaces for the city administration. Gradually, all the other buildings of the former abbey was purchased by the city and used to this day for parts of the municipal administration.

The town hall abbey is now seat of the Mayor of the city of Mönchengladbach.
