History

As the population of Europe in 1795 began with a free transfer of land to the condemned artist John Doody, was the first area Doody 's Bay. Other settlers in the area were William House (1795 ), Ann Benson (1796 ) and Charles Raven (1799 ). 1836 discharged convict John Glade was registered as the owner of the land of John Doody, which he had acquired in 1817. Glade enlarged his property by purchase of adjoining lands. After his death in 1848, his land was sold to Mr. W. Bill Yard a solicitor from Sydney, the then aufteilte it into plots and in November 1855 re-sold under the name of Gladesville.

A milestone in the development of the suburb was the establishment of the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum in 1838 on the banks of the Parramatta River. It was the first purpose-built psychiatric hospital in New South Wales. The building was largely designed by colonial architect Mortimer Lewis and built from 1836 to 1838. In 1869 it was renamed Gladesville Hospital for the Insane and 1915 in Gladesville Mental Hospital. 1993, it was merged with the Macquarie Hospital for Gladesville Macquarie Hospital. In 1997, the inpatient departments have been incorporated in Macquarie Hospital in North Ryde. The complex in Gladesville consists of many buildings that are listed in the Australian Register of the National Monuments.

One of the acquisitions of the hospital was a two-story sandstone building called The Priory in Salter Street. It originated in the 1840s, probably by the family Stubbs and had an east facade in georganischen style and a western facade with a gable and a painted sundial. In the 1850s it was sold to the Marist Fathers, who had an influence on the early development of Hunters Hill. The hospital bought the building in 1888 and in 1978 it was included in the Australian Register of the National Monuments.

Another historical landmark is the homestead rocking, where the poet Banjo Paterson lived in the 1870s and 1880s. It was built around 1850, is today still well preserved and available to the public in Banjo Patterson Park at the Punt Road open. He is also listed in the Australian Register of the National Monuments.
