Biography
Even with four years sang Gladys in the church choir, and age of eight, she founded her band " The Pips " consisting of her brother Merald " Bubba", her sister Brenda and two cousins , Ed Patten ( who died after a stroke in February 2005 ) and William Guest. The name " The Pips " was derived from the name of their former manager James " Pip " Wood, who was also her cousin.
The first disc release of " The Pips " appeared in 1957 and was called Whistle My Love, but was not very successful. Early 60s came then (after changing the name to " Gladys Knight and the Pips " ) the first successes with Every Beat of my Heart, Letter Full of Tears and Giving Up. The great success became apparent in the change of the record label Motown. There she made for a continued success, even though they never were so well known such as The Supremes, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations, who were successful at the same time with Motown. This led Knight back to being at Motown a " caste system " prevailed ". . In 1997 she sang at the White House, President Clinton, the concert was televised. Published in 1998, Knight Album Many Different Roads with spiritually -tinged soul and gospel songs.
Your CD At Last the 2001 was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Traditional R & B plate. Their duet with Ray Charles Heaven Help Us All was awarded the 2004 Grammy for Best Gospel song. Around the same time gave Knight her second gospel CD with One Voice, which was founded in Las Vegas from her 2002 gospel choir Saints Unified Voices out. One Voice reached # 2 on the U.S. Gospel charts and in 2005 was rewarded with a Grammy for Best Gospel Choir or Chorus Album. The non-commercial choir consisting entirely of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, who also belongs to Gladys Knight since 1997. From 1997 to 2006 Knight had a show at the Flamingo Hotel Las Vegas. After the end of the contract with the casino Knight made two small tours of England (2006 ) and South Africa (2007).
