Glas 1700

Glas 1700

The Glas 1700 is a midsize sedan Hans Glas GmbH in Dingolfing. The prototype was presented as a glass of 1500 in September 1963 at the IAA.

Prototype

As the beginning of 1963 the 1300 GT in Frua was built, gave glass there also commissioned the development of a new four-door midsize sedan. Frua had already developed in the early 1960s, a successor to the 'next to Borgward Goliath Brand, the " Hansa 1300 ", which was intended to replace the Hansa 1100. Erroneously, this development has often been attributed to the successor of the Borgward Isabella. The Hansa 1300 reached but - due to the bankruptcy of the Bremen company - not for mass production.

The now newly developed glass for car looked very similar to that design. Among other things, but he differed in a striking point of Borgward design: It was - like the BMW midsize cars - the for all BMW models from 1961 onwards, so typical Hofmeister kink. The glass designer Ischinger pierced the 1.3 -liter engine for the new GT to 1.5 liters. So was 1500 with an engine of 1489 cc and 70 hp (51 kW) are shown together with the new GT at the IAA a four-door glass.

1700

As with glass common to the model shown at the IAA was far from ready for production. In the following tests, it turned out that the big car with the 1.5 -liter engine was much too cumbersome for a sporty sedan. Similar to BMW the first model of the "new class " first as brought out in 1500 and then rebuilt to 1800, also glass sought salvation in the capacity enlargement. In September 1964 - one year after the presentation of the prototype at the IAA - the glass appeared in 1700 with 1682 cc and an output of 80 hp ( 59 kW). The limo took it so at least 150 km / h. In addition, there were almost 300 cars were equipped with a private automatic transmission. Of these, only very few copies still exist.

In September 1965, the engine output to 85 hp (62.5 kW) was increased, the maximum speed was now 155 km / h

1700 TS

Also in September 1965, the sedan with a more powerful engine was offered, which was also used in the GT models. He made 100 hp (74 kW) and made for the sedan for 170 km / h top speed.

Following the acquisition of Hans Glas GmbH by BMW AG disappeared in December 1967, the two sedans ( like most other glass models) from the market, because BMW had with the models 1800 and 2000 own vehicles similar design in the program. In three years, a total of 13,792 glass sedans were produced.

Second Career

A short time later, the Frua - bodies appeared, however, in South Africa again. Equipped with BMW technology, they have been for years as a BMW 1800 GL / SA and BMW 2000 GL / SA, continued to be built later than BMW 1804 BMW 2004 BMW South Africa. After Germany but they were not introduced.
