Glen Burnie is a census -designated place in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States and a suburb of Baltimore. According to the last census 2010 67.639 inhabitants live in the town.

Location and Attractions

Glen Burnie is located in northern Anne Arundel County, about 10 miles south of downtown Baltimore removed. East of the town is the Baltimore - Washington International Airport. Glen Burnie, once a mining town, is now a typical American suburban family homes, apartment complexes and retirement communities. The place is known in Baltimore for its excellent shopping.

History

Glen Burnie was founded in 1812 by a district attorney named Elias Glenn near the present-day Harlem Park, Baltimore. He gave the newly founded settlement initially the name Glenn Burne. Over time, as the land was inherited by his descendants, the name changed to " Glenn Bourne Farm" and finally to Glenburnie. 1854 William Wilkins Glenn founded the " Curtis Creek Mining, Furnace and Manufacturing Co. " whose business was very successful. This enabled the Glenns a large area of land in Anne Arundel County to purchase. After the death of William Wilkins Glenn, the country between his brother, his son and his nephew was divided. Glenburnie 1888 officially part of the State of Maryland. Since that time, the place continuously enlarged. 1899, the first school was opened in 1904 followed by the first church building.

In 1930 the name was changed at the suggestion of Postamtsvorsther Louis J. de Alba in Glen Burnie. In 1962, the Glen Burnie Mall was opened and the mid-1980s, the shopping center Marley Station. In 1965 Glen Burnie own hospital, which now holds 270 beds.

Traffic

Glen Burnie is connected via Interstate 97 to the national motorway network. Other road of national importance are the Paul Pitchner Memorial Highway and the Arundel Expressway. In the immediate vicinity of the Baltimore - Washington International Airport is located.
