Glen Wesley

Glen Edwin Wesley ( born October 2, 1968 in Red Deer, Alberta ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player (defender). During his career he played 1987-2008 for the Boston Bruins, Hartford Whalers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Carolina Hurricanes in the National Hockey League.

Career

Wesley began his career with the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League. NHL Entry Draft 1987, he was selected after strong performances in the Juniorenliaga of the Boston Bruins in the first round, third overall.

In the season 1987/88 he made immediate breakthrough in the NHL. With 37 points, he was elected to the NHL All- Rookie Team and he reached with the Bruins the final series for the Stanley Cup. There, however, the team defeated the Edmonton Oilers. Two years later they were again the Oilers in the finals against and subject again. He developed into one of the strongest defenders of the NHL. After seven seasons with the Bruins, he joined in the summer of 1994 to the Hartford Whalers. The Bruins were given for three first-round draft picks with which they Kyle McLaren 1996 Johnathan Aitken and 1997 Sergei Samsonov chose, 1995.

Also in Hartford, he quickly became the backing of the defense. For the season 1997/98 he moved with the team to Carolina. When the Carolina Hurricanes, he was one of the pillars and reached with the team at the end of the 2001/02 season, the Stanley Cup final. For the third time in his career he was defeated in the final series, this time against the Detroit Red Wings. When his contract expired in the following season, they gave him away to the Toronto Maple Leafs. Only seven games he played for the Leafs in the regular season and five more in the playoffs. In the summer he signed as a free agent again at the Hurricanes. He was also there when the team in the season 2005/ 06 was finally able to win the Stanley Cup. At the end of it he ended 2007/08 season at the age of 39 years, his 20-year NHL career and took over the following season a post in the executive suite of the Carolina Hurricanes.

He is the player who has completed by far the most games in the jersey of the Hurricanes.
