Glencoe, Highland

Glencoe ( Scottish Gaelic: Gleann Comhann ) is a village in the homonymous valley Glen Coe, Scotland. The place is in the northwest of the valley ( " Glen " ) at the mouth of the River Coe in Loch Leven, a sea inlet of Loch Linnhe at Invercoe. Administratively, Glencoe part of Lochaber, an area the Council Area Highland. It belongs to the county of Argyll.

History

The place is only since recently as Glencoe Village called (some street signs have been adjusted ), to distinguish it from the valley of Glen Coe. The settlement near the Valley is located very close to the point where it has occurred the massacre of Glencoe in the 1690s. At that time, all members of the clans of the MacDonalds and Hendersons were to be killed on the orders of King William II of the clan of the Campbells.

The village is not within the valley, but on an area, called Carnoch. Linguistically, the place belongs to the Gaelic, so the locals call the village A'Chàrnaich, which means " place of Cairns " means. Already in 1850, the settlement at the mouth of the River Coe was known under the name of Glencoe. It was originally founded on the north shore of Coe, but today is the place to find on the south bank near the bridge over the river. Glencoe also has a church, St Mary's Church and a small museum.

The place is known for its skiing and hiking opportunities and the adjacent valley with its painful history and the high ridge. Within the town there is a memorial, which commemorates the massacre of Glen Coe.
