Glengarriff

Glengarriff (Irish An Gleann Garbh, " the rough valley " ) is a village with about 800 inhabitants in the south-western area of County Cork in Ireland, known as the tourist resort.

Geography

Glengarriff is located 20 km west of Bantry, and 30 km east of Castletownbere. Lately, its importance as a waypoint along the Castletownbere Cork Fish delivery route has deteriorated because the local infrastructure has been improved since then and vehicle traffic can now drive at einstmal rural thoroughfare with significant pace.

Economy

The economy is determined by tourism, subsistence agriculture and local services.

Things to Do

Glengarriff is located on a sheltered bay and is surrounded by high mountains. Notable among the local attractions is the garden island Ilnacullin. The old round Martello Tower, which was built to defend against a threatened invasion by the troops of Napoleon, provides a comprehensive view of the surrounding area. The nearby state forest (the glen, this gave Glengarriff his name) contains some of the oldest oak and birch trees, which are still present in Ireland. A short but steep path leads up to the Lady- Bantry's Lookout, which offers a view of the western Corkgebietes and Bantry Bay.

Footpaths in the region are available in abundance, live music is often available in the evenings at local pubs, especially during the tourist season. Glengarriff offers among other things, a selection of shops, art galleries, pubs and restaurants.

Sports

The Glengarriff Golf Club is a nine - hole golf course on the east side of town. He is associated with Maureen O'Hara, an actress who is domiciled in the vicinity. The Glengarriff Nature Reserve offers many well-marked walking trails to explore the oak forests, rivers and mountains.
