Glenn Poshard

Glenn Poshard ( born October 30, 1945 in Herald, White County, Illinois) is an American politician. Between 1989 and 1999 he represented the state of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Glenn Poshard visited 1950-1958 the Herald Elementary School and thereafter until 1962, the Carmi Township High School. Between 1962 and 1965 he served in the U.S. Army. Then he studied until 1974 at Southern Illinois University. In the following years, he held various positions in education. He has worked among others as a teacher and coach. Between 1974 and 1984 he was director of the Area Service Center for Educators of the gifted, an institution for the promotion of gifted students. At the same time he proposed as a member of the Democratic Party launched a political career. Between 1984 and 1988 he was in the Illinois Senate.

In the congressional elections of 1988 Poshard was the 22nd electoral district of Illinois in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Kenneth J. Gray on January 3, 1989. After four elections he was able to complete in Congress until January 3, 1999 five legislative sessions. Since 1993 he represented there as a successor to Terry L. Bruce the 19th district of his state.

In 1998, Glenn Poshard renounced another Congress candidate. Instead, he applied unsuccessfully for the post of governor of Illinois. After the end of his time in the U.S. House of Representatives Poshard founded together with his wife Jo Poshard Foundation for Abused Children, the, a foundation to help abused children. Since 2006, Glenn Poshard is President of Southern Illinois University.
