Glerá in the city of Akureyri

The Glerá ( Isl Glass River ) is a river in northern Iceland.

Course

It rises in the mountains of Tröllaskagi Peninsula. The highest mountains of northern Iceland adjoin its valley, Kerling, Tröllafjöll and Vindheimafjöll. By named after the river Glerárdalur the Glerá flows into the town of Akureyri, where it flows into the fjord Eyjafjörður.

Power station

Importance was the river in the industrial age, when his energy was harnessed by dams and electric power was generated. The power plant, which had been taken in 1922 as the first in the north of Iceland in operation, has now been shut down, the dam still exists.

Glerárhverfi

In Akureyri the river separates the city center from the district Glerárhverfi, with 7,000 of the 16,000 inhabitants of one of the largest districts of Akureyri.

Glerárdalur

The upper valley of the Glerá, Glerárdalur, set amongst the mountains of Tröllaskagi and equipped with numerous hiking trails, was filed on August 31, 2012 under nature protection.
